Drawings and prints

These Drawings and Etchings are part of a series investigating form and structure. The Purpose of these drawings is to give a sense and a feel for the object, looking at how you see rather than what you see. The drawings were sketched on site and then added to from memory. The drawings are built up and edited over time showing that they are a visibly altered image constantly being scrutinized and re-worked giving the drawing an existence of its own rather than a perfectly re-produced image.

The BT owned Goonhilly Satellite Space Station is set in the lizard peninsula and with over 60 Giant Satellite dishes it is the Largest and Oldest Satellite Station on Earth. The dishes are busy sending and receiving TV pictures all over the world, while simultaneously handling thousands of international phone, fax, data and video calls.

Monuments Reclaimed

During my time at Goonhilly introduced me to the idea of aerial drawings as if taken from orbiting satellites. I started to look at past cultures and man-made monuments. The drawings shown take reference from aerial bombing footage from the gulf war and combining this with the concepts of mapping, excavation with the sense of early aerial photography.

The landscapes are originally created by hand rubbing layers of graphite to achieve areas of tone.

Collograph and Digital Prints

The Collograph prints take reference from battle Armour and its form and decoration. Through examining the integration of its functional design combined with elements of Greek and Roman Mythology, specifically the works the Odyssey and Iliad by Homer. From this combination, a rich language of symbolism, form and meaning has evolved.

My work re-examines this construct in a contemporary context using the 2D representation of Greek and other armour as a beginning to explore the idea of armour as a metaphor for narrative. Classical designs and decoration are adapted into contemporary forms using new and traditional materials.
